Jacoby Transfers

Jacoby Transfers is another convention that can sometimes be used when you partner opens in NoTrump. This transfer bid shows a five-card suit in the Majors or a six-card in the Minors. When you bid 2D you are transferring to Hearts and when you bid 2H you are transferring to Spades. Your bid is "artificial" and opener should know to bid the suit higher than the one you bid. Opener may superaccept the transfer by jumping with 4 cards and a maximum hand. Following a transfer bid a new suit by responder is game forcing except 2S -- which can be passed. This would show a invitational hand with 5/5 in the majors. With a stronger hand with 5/5 in the Majors you would first transfer to spades and then bid hearts.

After the transfer has been accepted responder can invite to game by bidding 2nt. This gives his partner several options. With a good fit and maximum values he can bid 4 of the major. With maximum values and no fit he can bid 3nt. Alternatively, if responder knows the partnership has game values he bids 3nt. This can be corrected to 4 of the major if there is a known fit

Your partner opens a strong NT. You have a five card spade suit and you know your partnership belongs in game. First, you transfer to Spades by bidding 2H, the suit directly under your 5 card suit.

Then, on your next bid you bid 3nt giving your partner a choice of games. With 3 nice spades -- he opts for a spade game and bids 4S.

Your partner opens a strong notrump (15-17hcp). You have 7HCP and a five card Heart suit. Since it is advantageous for the strong hand to remain hidden -- a transfer bid is used. Your 2D bid is artificial and tells your partner to bid the next higher suit.

When pard accepts this transfer by bidding Hearts -- You will pass.
